Readiness & Guidelines

Choosing When to Start

Young child exploring a colourful toy xylophone
Early musical exploration helps develop rhythm and listening before formal training.

Begin with Interest and Readiness

There is no single starting age that suits every learner. A child’s interest, attention span, comfort with the instrument and readiness to follow instructions all matter. Speak with a teacher before deciding which course to begin.

Enjoy Music Before Formal Lessons

Younger children can enjoy listening, singing, clapping and exploring simple musical sounds with a parent. These playful experiences can help them discover what they enjoy without the pressure of a formal lesson.

It Is Never Too Late to Begin

Teenagers, adults and senior learners are welcome. Whether you want to try a new hobby or return to an instrument, begin at a level that matches your experience and work towards goals that matter to you.

Reasons to Make Time for Music

Enjoy a creative break. Discover songs you love. Practise listening closely. Build a regular routine. Learn patience through repetition. Explore musical expression. Share music with others. Celebrate small milestones. Challenge yourself at your own pace. Experience the satisfaction of playing a piece you have worked on.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about beginning music lessons, instruments, and practice routines.

Can I join without any musical experience?

Yes. Our lessons introduce the fundamentals step by step, including notation, rhythm and basic playing technique. Tell us you are a beginner when you enquire.

Will I learn to read music?

Yes. Western notation is central to our teaching approach. You will learn how written notes and rhythms connect to what you hear and play.

How do I choose an instrument for my child?

Start with the instrument your child is interested in, then discuss their age, readiness and physical comfort with a teacher. The team can help you compare suitable options.

Do I need to learn piano before another instrument?

You do not need to begin with piano. Discuss your preferred instrument with our team so we can help you choose an appropriate course.

I have learned before. Can I continue from my current level?

Tell us about your previous lessons and the pieces or skills you are comfortable with. Your teacher can review your experience and recommend a suitable starting point.

Do I need an instrument at home?

Regular access to an instrument helps you practise between lessons. Before buying, ask the teacher about the features, size and accessories suitable for your course.

Do I need to bring an instrument to class?

Requirements vary by instrument. JSM provides instruments for classroom use, but you should confirm what to bring, including any personal instrument, books or accessories, before your first lesson.

Can I learn online?

Yes. Live online lessons are available for keyboard, piano, guitar, violin and music theory. You will need access to your instrument, a suitable device and a reliable internet connection.

How long will it take to learn?

Progress depends on your starting point, goals, attendance and practice. Your teacher can help you set manageable milestones; there is no fixed timeline that applies to every student.

How much should I practise?

Follow the practice plan agreed with your teacher. Short, focused sessions on a regular basis are a practical way to build a routine. The amount of practice can change with your age, level and goals.

How can I support my child if I do not read music?

Help create a regular practice routine, encourage effort and ask your child to show you what they are learning. Your teacher can explain the exercises and how you can support practice at home.

Can adults and senior learners join?

Yes. We welcome adult and senior learners, including complete beginners and those returning to music after a break.

Do you offer home tuition?

Yes. Enquire with your location, instrument and preferred timings. The team will confirm service area coverage and teacher availability.

Can I prepare for a music examination?

If you have an examination goal, discuss it before enrolling. Ask the team to confirm the syllabus, grade, teacher support and any registration arrangements available for your instrument.

Can I change my lesson time or instrument?

Contact the team to discuss your needs. Changes depend on teacher availability and the applicable lesson arrangements. Confirm rescheduling, cancellation and course change policies when you enrol.

How do I confirm fees and lesson arrangements?

Contact JSM for current fees, class duration, frequency and available times. You can also ask about trial lessons, individual or group formats, parent attendance and performance opportunities before booking.
